"GROWING INTO LITERACY":
PRINTS Components:
To be trained as a facilitator:
Growing Into Literacy: Train the Facilitator Manual
This Manual accompanies the Video that follows and is a guide to using
the video to acquire the necessary understanding and training to facilitate
the PRINTS Program if a prospective facilitator does not have the opportunity
of a training workshop. Training as a facilitator for PRINTS has three
thrusts or focuses: Knowing the Program, Accessing the Information,
and Sharing the Program with parents/caregivers.
Growing Into Literacy: Train the Facilitator Video
This is a 75 minute video which accompanies the Manual above. Under
the direction of two skilled hosts, a person is led through the Program
to accomplish the three thrusts or focuses indicated above. NOTE: To
use the Manual and Video for training, you must have access to the materials
below as these are referred to/analysed in the training.
To facilitate the Program for Parents
and Others
Growing Into Literacy: Facilitator's Handbook
Note this is called a Handbook, while the material for training is referred
to as a Manual- just to distinguish them. This Handbook is necessary
for training and also for facilitating the Program for parents/ caregivers.
The Handbook, contains important information about PRINTS and especially,
Session Plans for each of the 12 sessions that facilitators would engage
in when working with parents.
Growing Into Literacy: Parent Video (To accompany Facilitator's
Handbook)
This is a 30 minute video and is designed to provide parents who are
being trained with a glimpse of other parents/caregivers working with
children on specific activities. To make a video demonstrating all activities
would be impossible in terms of costs, so selected activities from each
of the five STEPS are illustrated.
Growing Into Literacy: Parent Handbook
This is optional. Since the activities in the PRINTS Program are developed
in a hands-on manner, parents should feel competent in their understanding
of them when they use them with children. However, a group of parents
requested basic information on the activities which they could have
for future reference and so this Handbook was developed. If a facilitator
feels that a parent might be uncomfortable with expectations of reading,
then, either this material should not be used, or the facilitator should
make it clear that parents are not expected to read this ill the sessions,
but can have it for their own use.
New! New! New!
This fall will see the launch of the first phase of a Family Literacy
Program for parents and teachers of children from grade 1 to grade 9.
This program is called STEPS (Strategy Teaching, Empowerment, Partnerships
and Success) and has been piloted at MacMorran Community Centre for
the past two years. The first phase consists of a Helper's Guide which
can be used by teachers and parents to provide support to their children
in reading and writing using a strategy based approach. Later a Parent
Facilitator Guide for training parents how to effectively use the Helper's
Guide will be made available. Watch for further information!
