Good News!PRINTS Family Literacy Network has just received good news that its work will be funded by the Provincial Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for next year. In addition to printing the Newsletters, training parent facilitators, piloting the revised PRINTS, and publicizing early/family literacy, the Network is also initiating a project to explore the interrelations of health and early literacy development. Sincere thanks are extended to those who wrote letters of support for the continuing work of the PRINTS Family Literacy Network.

A main goal of the Council will be to foster coordination and development of programs that focus on the early learning needs of children and their families. The Council will have a cross-departmental approach and will endeavour to ensure that resources are being used effectively to meet the needs of young children, identify gaps in the types of services available, and examine the potential for new, more effective delivery models. The overall goal is that all children in the province will have a healthy start in life and will make a successful transition from home to school. The Ministerial Council will be supported by the Division of Early Childhood Learning, whose director is Ms. Charlotte Strong. PRINTS Facilitator TrainingTwo facilitator training workshops were held in the St. John's area. One was held on November 20, 2004 for staff of the Daybreak Parent and Child Centre, and staff of Buckmaster's Circle Community Centre. This workshop was held in the Community Room of Sobey's, Merrymeeting Road, St. John's and their support is appreciated. Below are photos from this training session. A second facilitator training session was held on January 15 for remaining staff at Daybreak Parent and Child Centre. The photos on the next page show a small group session from this training session, and a photo of Daybreak Parent and Child Centre, Barnes Road. This is an impressive looking older building. However, Daybreak is hoping to find bigger space to consolidate its various programs. |
