Literacy Symposium
at Warkworth Literacy Council
Warkworth Literacy Council in Campbellford, Ontario was
the site of a very successful Literacy Symposium last September. Outside guests
were welcomed, many of them being teachers from other Ontario prisons, to view
a presentation of speakers dedicated to literacy and the learning disabled.
Officials from both National and Regional Headquarters, who pride themselves in
being in the educational end of corrections, attended and participated in the
presentation.
In conjunction with the Symposium, a basic literacy tutor
workshop was held for new members, facilitated by Laubach trainers Lana
Faessler and Bev Clarke. Several of these newly trained tutors have
now been paroled and some have stepped into executive positions in the group
becoming the nucleus of the future for Laubach literacy at the Warkworth
Institution.
Council members were pleased to welcome back for the second year
in a row Laubach Literacy Ontario's Provincial President, Myles Gallant.
With the assistance of his Vice-President, Howard Lane, certificates
were presented to a number of tutors. Also in attendance was Student
Representative to both the provincial and national Laubach Boards, Arnie
Stewart, who spoke to the audience from a student's perspective.
Members of the Warkworth Literacy Council are looking forward to
hosting another symposium in 2003. |
