A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Suddenly
I realize that this is my last report to Literacy Connections. My two
years as your President will be completed in May. My thanks to all of you for
the privilege of serving you in this role. Also, a very special thanks to our
staff for their help during the past year. In November, your Board of Directors
and most of the Provincial Presidents met in Toronto. The Presidents met prior
to a joint meeting with the Board. Carol Fraser, of Prince Edward
Island, chaired the meeting and
Peter Sawyer, of New Brunswick, acted as Secretary. Thank you Carol and
Peter.LLC President, Jim Morrow A projected financial status report indicating a greater deficit compared to our last fiscal year influenced the meeting to look at all aspects of our organization. Forty-three ideas for change were recorded and Ad Hoc Committee was struck to develop a process to deal with these ideas as well as the various motions passed at the meeting. The committee is to file a report one month prior to the May Board meeting. This will be in Winnipeg, Manitoba in conjunction with Laubach Literacy Canada's (LLC's) 9th Biennial Conference and the LLC Annual Meeting, May 22-25. (See page3.) Our Board of Directors appointed Wendy Seys as Manager of LLC and she now has all Field Staff reporting directly to her. Wendy has all Field Staff reporting directly to her. Wendy has filled many of the gaps caused by members a sincere "thank you", Wendy. Grace Saabas, LLC's Past-President, has officially represented LLC at functions that was unable to attend. Her dedication and commitment are appreciated. The five national literacy organizations recently made a presentation to the House of Commons Finance Committee to encourage an increase in support for the National Literacy Secretariat (NLS) in the next budget. The result was a recommendation by the Finance Committee to increase NLS funding. Ken Mader, LLC's Treasurer, had excellent input to this committee by making our presentation. Turn to page 4 for budget details. The on-going support of Senator Joyce Fairbairn and the staff at the National Literacy Secretariat (NLS) is appreciated. LLC and our government partners are working together to ensure Laubach's EACH ONE TEACH ONE (EOTO) programs continue to be delivered efficiently. I have faith in your Board of Directors doing the right things. I also have faith in all our members nominating and electing future Boards who will find ways and means to expand the EOTO methods to all parts of Canada. Your Board is focusing on how we can make the greatest impact with our EOTO programs within our budget limitations. We will keep you posted by way of Literacy Connections. For all inactive tutors reading this, please consider renewing your commitment to tutoring. Our country needs your expertise more than ever. There is much to do. Having a literate Canada is a big step in improving our national economy and reducing a host of social problems facing our country. A special "thank you" to all our volunteers for making a difference. Very sincerely, | |
