FOR TRAINERS Training trainers to do family literacy workshops in their own provinces. [12 hours in 4 parts: Wednesday 7pm; Thursday 9am; Friday 9am and 1:30pm] Registration limited to trainers. A chance for tutors and teachers to explore their own personal learning styles and to explore methods for helping learners develop awareness about learning strategies. Exploring New Worlds: Involving your students in their learning Reading as an interactive process, including enabling strategies, especially for people with visual processing problems. Includes a discussion based on the experience of Winnipeg Volunteer Reading Aides students developing their New Words, New Worlds publication. [3 hours: Thursday 9am] Presenter: Elma Gerwin E. Creative Teaching Strategies for Tutors to Develop Writing Getting your students to write can be difficult. This of course explores ways to make writing happen that are easy and fun. [3 hours: Thursday 9am] Presenter: Judy Baker F. ESL - English as a Second Language A short overview of the Laubach Way to English the Emergency English as written by Marti Lane, Life Prints and Idioms. [6 hours in 2 parts: Friday 9am and 1:30pm] Presenters: Kae Harasym assisted by Elma Gerwin G. Math for Tutors Identifying ways to teach students how to do math. [3 hours: Friday 9am] Presenter: Jane Tuer H. Volunteer Board Development Identifying potential volunteers, recognizing the contributions of volunteers and building a board. [3 hours: Saturday 1:30pm] Presenter: To be announced I. Aboriginal Healing (open to students) A short description of aboriginal healing and why it is important to the aboriginal community. [3 hours: Saturday 1:30pm] Presenter: Myra Laramie J. How to Write a Funding Proposal - How to Work with the Media and Politicians Helping councils enhance the skills needed for writing funding proposals, releases and letters to politicians. [3 hours: Saturday 1:30pm] Presenter: Donna Marion STUDENT WORKSHOPS K. Life Skills/Self-Esteem This workshop combines life skills and self-esteem as illustrated in the
YMCA Life Skills manual. The workshop uses a participant activity that
involves creating a collage from pictures supplied by the instructor. [3 hours:
Thursday 9am] Presenter: Brenda Cunnington L. Learning Disabilities This is a workshop for students with learning difficulties, assesing their learning styles and providing strategies for them. Share your experiences in how you cope and what strategies work for you. [3 hours: Friday 1:30pm] Presenter: Shirley Stone M.
