TIPS ON HOW TO READ ALOUD
- Introduce the title, author and illustrator. Talk about what authors and
illustrators do. Encourage your child to point to the information s/he knows.
- Ask your child to predict what the story might be about based on the title
and the pictures.
- To begin to read, say something like, "Let's read the story to find
out if that is what happens."
- Read with lots of expression. Vary the sound of your voice. Use a
different voice for each character.
Encourage your child's comments as you read.
- Help them to relate feelings, characters and events in the story to their
own experiences. For example, you might ask, "Have you ever felt that way?"
or "What would you do if you had that problem?"
- As you read the story, occasionally ask your child, "What do you think
will happen next?"
Let your child be your guide to how much discussion to include.
Encourage your child to join in the reading.
- Pause at the words or phrases that are repeated to let your child read
those parts s/he knows to you.
- Encourage younger children to read the story to you by looking at the
pictures.
- Your child may enjoy "echo" reading, that is, repeating every
line after you, or s/he may want to read the words together.
After reading.
- Encourage your child to talk about what he liked or didn't like, her
favourite characters or his own experiences that the story brought forth.
- Your child may like to extend the story experience by drawing or painting a
picture about it. S/he may want to act out the story or use puppets to do so.
Your child may enjoy retelling the story from the point of view of another
character. S/he may want to make up a different ending to the story or to tell
or write a story of his or her own.
