Nova Scotia

In this, the International Year of Volunteers, we in Nova Scotia wish to salute the many contributions of all our volunteers.

The individuals whose contributions are highlighted on this page were early Laubach volunteers. They were selected from the hundreds of Nova Scotia Laubach literacy volunteers who have spent much of their valuable time and energy helping adults improve their literacy skills.

Irlavere Tubbe organized the first Laubach literacy workshop in Bridgewater in 1970.

Dr. Ida Delaney became a certified Laubach tutor in 1971 at the first Irlavere Tubbe Cape Breton workshop and she later became the first trainer in the area, rising to the status of Supervising Trainer in 1979, and continued to help students until her death in 1997.

In 1971 Thelma Blinn attended the Laubach tutor workshop in Halifax and in 1971 she became a Laubach trainer. As Chair of the Eastern Canada Region in 1976, she published the first Eastern Canada newsletter, Bird in the Hand.

Margaret Smith was the first Chair of the Halifax Regional Literacy Council.

Donna Bowdridge succeeded Margaret Smith in 1973 as Halifax Chair. She was also the Chair of Eastern Canada Region from 1974-76.

Alice Currie's hard work and dedication as the Chair of the Sydney Literacy Council during the 1970s enabled the council to survive the lean years. It is currently Nova Scotia's largest council!

Cecelia LeVatte published the first edition of Nova Scotia's newsletter, The Mayflower, in 1987.

Christina MacQuarrie worked with Cecelia on The Mayflower and was also a very active trainer in the province-not to mention being Nova Scotia's Provincial Training Officer in the early 1990s.
