The Training and Certification Committee consists of a Training Officer from each province. It meets twice a year (January and June) to discuss training materials, new ideas and designs and deal with questions and problems as they arise. This committee also approves the applications for certification and decides if they are accepted or not. Before this committee came into being, each trainer's certification application was checked by only one certified trainer. To ensure all applications for trainer certification are carefully reviewed, we now have at least two members of the Training and Certification Committee check each application. The reason we are so careful about the training that is done is because we want consistently high standards of training across the country.
This committee came into being in 1988 when the provincial trainers first met in Montreal. At that time a Trainer's Handbook was commissioned to be developed for Canada by long-time LLC trainer Connie Morgan. Revisions have been made on several occasions. In 1988, there was very little adult education material on the market other than the Laubach resources. However, over the years there has been a great deal of material produced. You just need to look in the new catalogue from LLC's New Readers Bookstore! There has been supplementary reading material produced-some of it is Canadian, thanks to long-time LLC Board member, the late Gladys Neale, and her group of writers. Since our core material is produced in the United States, it is important that we supplement our teaching with Canadian publications. A new curriculum series, Voyager, arrived in 1999. Workshops on Learning Disabilities have become a necessary part of our preparation for tutoring. Workshops to help the tutors with mathematics have also become popular. In order to accommodate these new ideas, we are going to do a workshop for our Provincial Training Officers on Training by Design. This will bring a new dimension to LLC's training and it will give trainers the opportunity to build a training program to meet their community's special needs. The June 2001 meeting of the Training and Certification Committee was indeed very busy. The following individuals received certification either as a Trainer-Literacy or a Supervising Trainer-Literacy. The countless volunteer hours you have devoted to the training of volunteer tutors is very much appreciated. Congratulations!
