HAPPY NEW YEAR! On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Laubach Literacy of Canada (LLC), we wish you and yours a happy, safe, rewarding and prosperous 2002! LLC has come a long way in the past 30 years. From the days of our earliest volunteer efforts in Nova Scotia, through the years of becoming nationally incorporated with our own bookstore, the birth and growth of our provincial organizations, our participation in national initiatives, the development and expansion of our programs, the emergence of our students as leaders, the continuing development of our volunteer leadership and its committees and advisors and most importantly, our commitment and contribution to helping Canadians learn the skills they need to improve their lives we have become the largest grassroots literacy organization in the country. Quite a lot to be proud of, and thankful for, in our first 30 years! With the new millennium comes an opportunity for us to take stock of who we are, what we do and how we do it and what we need to do or can do better! With this in mind, LLC is embarking on an organizational review in 2002. This is the first time we have undertaken a national review of this kind, and we are very excited about the opportunity to help position LLC for the future. LLC has contracted Diane Abbey-Livingston & Associates (DAL) to help us develop and conduct a comprehensive consultation with representatives of all of LLC's stakeholders: students, tutors and trainers, councils and provincial executives, LLC's staff and national Board, LLC's supporters, funders, and other national literacy groups. The goal of this review is to provide us with a picture of where we are today, and to help us evaluate where we need to go. Over the next few months, Diane Abbey-Livingston and Robert Coughlin of DAL will be working with LLC to create the framework for the review. Information will be gathered through the winter and early spring through consultations, questionnaires, focus groups and one-on-one interviews. The final report will be the primary resource for LLC's short and long-term strategic planning. Because of your efforts, Laubach Literacy has grown and continues to grow, enriching the lives of adults from coast to coast through basic literacy and numeracy training. On behalf of Laubach Literacy of Canada, I invite you to help guide our future by taking part, over the next six months, in this national organizational review. Watch our web site at www.laubach.ca, and future mailings, for more information. Together we can make a difference! Sincerely
