Our summer employment student, Lindsay Lyons, conducted reading and activity circles for children out on the lawn at the Nanaimo Museum during July. They were well received and the Museum would like to have more. For those of you who are not aware of the location, the museum is located right outside the back door of our book store. Lindsay has been volunteering in our book store for a few years now, looking after the children's section, and is studying Education at . It was a valuable experience for her to set up and conduct the children's reading and activity circles. |
The President of Literacy Central VI, Maggie Lines, and her husband Tim Snaydon have a healthy baby boy, Rhys William. Born August 12th at 10:30 pm weighing in at 8lbs. 8oz. This is our new web site. We have turned the management of our web site over to the able people at the National Adult Literacy Database. Management of a web site is a full time job and if you don't do it all the time you forget the technical stuff. Now all we have to do is remember to notify NALD of any changes or new information. Starbuck's (the coffee people) have a foundation that can award grants for community literacy projects. The stipulation is that a Starbuck's Partner (employee) must recommend and participate in the project. So it would really help if those of you who frequent Starbuck's could talk about the importance of literacy, inform them of the statistics and let them know what is happening in your community and how they could get involved. The more people they hear from the more their awareness will be increased. A hearty Thank You for donations from our community partners the Rotary Club of lantzville, the Harbor Lite Lioness club and the Canada Post Heritage Club. Literacy Central VI is a community based non-profit society. We raise all of our operating revenue in our community through bingos, our book store, the United Way, tag days, and a variety of fundraising events. |
