Christine

New Tutor Coordinator

Literacy Central VI is pleased to introduce Christine Norris who is replacing tutor coordinator Jacqueline Webster while she is on maternity leave. Christine has many years of experience in adult education and cares a great deal about basic literacy. She has been working for 17 years at Malaspina University-College so is a familiar face to many. A little known fact is that Christine taught their first literacy class in 1982. Many tutors will have met her as she has given many E.S.L. workshops for the tutor program.

It's a Girl!

Gabrielle Webster-Baumel was born April 22. Those of you who were coming into the literacy office may remember that Jacqueline worked until April 8th. Congratulations to Jacqueline, Morris and Rhianna.

Computers, Computers, Computers

Thanks to funding from Human Resources Canada we have launched our computer recycling program. We have a number of community partners, to date: Nanaimo Recycling Exchange, Harewood Family of Community Schools, Harewood Community Projects Society, Child Development Centre, and Lifeworks Consulting plus the many, many people and companies who are donating computers and computer parts. Since April we have placed 12 computers into homes of families who could not otherwise afford them and we have coordinated basic computer instruction and installation through the Harewood Family of Community Schools.

We have already heard some heartwarming stories of immediate progress and improvement. This program can't help but be a winner for everyone involved. So, please think of us when you are upgrading your computer systems. We need everything, including old memory chips, hard drives, video cards, printers, etc. In addition we are looking for warehouse type space that is warm and dry where we can store and work on the donations.
