Christmas Party
Our Christmas event for volunteers will take place:

Tuesday evening, December 15
in the Arbutus Room
at Malaspina U-C
from 6:00 to 8:00 PM

This is a pot-luck event, everyone is invited to bring finger-food. In addition you are invited to bring a new child's book, unwrapped, for contribution to the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive.

Altrusa Club of Nanaimo

Literacy Central VI would like to thank the Altrusa Club of Nanaimo for their generous donations to the Early Intervention Reading Program at Georgia Avenue School. Their donations will enable the program coordinators to purchase Story Packs, the Storyteller Literacy Program and videos and handbooks for volunteer training. We are hoping to find funding for the organizers to be able to expand this program to include the other 10 inner city schools in our area Many studies have shown how important it is to intervene early in a child's life and improve their reading levels before it affects their ability to learn.

Family Literary

The new focus from the Literacy Secretariat is to be family literacy. You will see a number of national and local programs that will focus on parents and children. They are declaring January 27, 1999 Family Literacy Day.

Honda Canada is sponsoring a television specie to be shown on CTV that day. "Penny's Odyssey" will incorporate eight one-minute family literacy information pieces and will offer tips on making your home literacy-friendly.
