Board Orientation

Literacy Central VI will be holding board orientation in May. This is for anyone who might be interested in being on the board of Literacy Central VI. We will hold a workshop to explain some of our history, what we are involved in now, and our financial structure. We then talk about what is involved and what sort of time commitment is expected. Contact Carolyn at Literacy Central VI if you would like more information.

Gary Schmitz 1916 – 2003

photo of Gary SchmitzLiteracy Central VI has dedicated our Children's Book Section in memory of Gary Schmitz. Gary was a long time volunteer with Literacy Central VI beginning in 1992 when he took volunteer tutor training. The same year he joined the BEARS program at Princess Royal School volunteering right up until last year. Literacy Central VI opened its book store in 1995 and soon after Gary began volunteering there as well, fulfilling many tasks. We will miss him.

Nicole Liptak

Nicole started at Literacy Central VI as a volunteer tutor in June 2003. She is enthusiastic about the benefits of tutoring. She says it keeps her soul intact. Nicole has had another connection at Literacy Central VI since September 2003; she is our bookstore supervisor. Her goal has been to make the bookstore as user-friendly as possible so people can find things easily. The signage in the bookstore has been improved and some sections have been reorganized. Nicole would like to thank the wonderful bookstore volunteers, who are a good group of workers and very knowledgeable.

Software Donations

Our tutoring program is interested in software donations. We require original disks with registration numbers and documentation. Our wish list for the tutoring rooms includes: typing tutor programs, Microsoft Office or Word 97 or 2000, word games, and other educational software. Our CAP site could also use Front Page or other web-design software. Contact Brian for further information.

Congratulations

...and to Malaspina instructor, Lindsay Wiekenkamp, who is retiring on March 31. Lindsay was Literacy Central VI's founding treasurer, coordinated/co-coordinated the tutor program from 1994 to 1996, and also did the tutor training in Spring 2000. Her friends at Literacy Central VI, her students and colleagues thank her for her dedication to literacy. We wish her the best.
