Staff Carolyn McWhinnie, Executive Director WRAP-Word Recognition and Phonics We are very excited about WRAP, an educational software program that our office has developed. Brian O’Rooney, our computer technician, worked with a committee of a volunteer tutor, Helen Godolphin; a learner, John Kupusa; our tutor coordinator, Jacqueline Webster; along with exceptional input from retired Malaspina U-C instructor Christine Norris. Volunteer tutor Rob Ashwell did the voice recordings. This software gives the literacy learner practice in recognizing words that follow phonetic rules as well as high-frequency words that are not phonetic. A unique feature of WRAP is that it allows tutors to input their own words, thereby tailoring the lessons to their learners’ level, interests, and needs. The simple step-by-step instructions result in tutor-made lessons that have the same elements as the pre-programmed lessons. WRAP has been distributed to over 200 literacy organizations and educational institutions across Canada as required under the funding guidelines for a cost shared grant from Human Resources Development Canada and the Ministry of Advanced Education of BC. If you wish to purchase a copy, it is available from Literacy Central VI for $149.99 plus applicable taxes. Laugh for Literacy with Arthur BlackLiteracy Central VI will be hosting media celebrity and author Arthur Black at our 2nd annual reading event. This year’s Laugh for Literacy will be held Wednesday evening, August 11th at the Nanaimo Yacht Club. There will be wine and hors d’oeuvres, a number of exciting silent auction items, and additional entertainment provided by a jazz quartet from Woodlands Secondary School. Tickets are $25.00 each. Contact us to reserve yours. Annual General MeetingYou are cordially invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of Literacy Central VI to be held on Tuesday, June 8th, 2004, 6:00 pm at the Coast Bastion Hotel. Share some of our accomplishments; there will be guest speakers and refreshments. We look forward to seeing you. Please RSVP to Carolyn or Linda at 754-8988 if you will be attending. Software DonationsWe are sending out our plea once again for software donations (original disks with registration numbers and documentation). We are in particular need of Microsoft Office or Word 97 or a later version for our tutoring rooms. Are there any corporate or private donors out there who could help us? Please contact Brian for further information. |
