Staff Carolyn McWhinnie, Executive Director Premier's Literacy SummitCarolyn McWhinnie, Executive Director of Literacy Central VI, attended the Premier's Literacy Summit on November 3, 2004 in Vancouver. There were a number of familiar faces from the founding meetings of Literacy B.C. from 15 years ago. It was a reminder of how long we have been involved in the literacy movement. There are many more literacy programs than when we started and much more lip service is paid to "literacy"; however, problems of low literacy persist. The Premier made a number of announcements of new and improved literacy initiatives and many more partnerships. Credit for attention to literacy by this government has to go to Linda Mitchell, the Executive Director of Literacy B.C. She made a connection with Gordon Campbell when he was mayor of Vancouver and has maintained that connection. Linda Mitchell chairs the Premier's Advisory Council on Literacy. Its task is to assess the literacy challenges in our province and pinpoint the most urgent needs. The Council is to submit its first report early in the New Year. Our Board of Directors
