Raise A Reader DayVolunteer Tutor Archie Wilkinson helping to spread the word at Save On Foods at Country Club Centre on Raise A Reader Day. Save On bookstore managers at both Country Club and Woodgrove stores held a book drive for us as part of their Raise A Reader promotion. Many thanks for thinking of us. They collected a couple of truckloads of books for our bookstore. 3rd Annual Scrabble for LiteracyStart practising. We've set the date and booked the facility: Saturday, March 12th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at Bowen Park. (We've moved.) This year there will be a "novice" and an "experienced" division. The novice division will play 3 games in the morning; we will have lunch and awards; and then the experienced division will continue to play through the afternoon. Registration will remain the same at a minimum of $50.00 worth of pledges and is open to all ages. We will send out registration and pledge forms in January. Linda Oman: Our Administrative Assistant
Linda is the welcoming face that you see at the Literacy Central VI office and the friendly voice on the phone. Along with doing general office duties, she registers people who use the CAP site, and helps tutors and learners in whatever way she can. She may seem quiet, but she also has her terrier side, which some of us become very aware of when we have overdue tutoring material out. Linda’s first contact with Literacy Central VI was with the Spring 1996 tutor training course and her subsequent tutoring. She came to work as our administrative assistant in August 2002. She is also an active member of the Literacy Central VI bookclub. Linda says the best part of her job at Literacy Central VI is the people that she meets. She appreciates the time that tutors and other volunteers give to the program. She would also like us all to recognize the learners. It is a major step when a learner comes for help, and making that step needs to be applauded. We applaud you, Linda. We appreciate your calm, competent, caring presence at Literacy Central VI. Light-Up for CharityOur thanks to Country Club Centre for including us in their Light-Up for Charity fundraiser. We sold over 50 tickets to give us $250.00. It was a fun evening for families and we hope they will do it again next year. HistoryAs we updated our little History of Literacy Central VI booklet, some interesting statistics came to light. Since coordinating the Malaspina University-College Volunteer Tutor Program from 1991, there have been 602 volunteers trained as tutors and 2,020 learners matched with those tutors. We estimate that in the past year there has been about 7,000 hours of volunteer tutoring. Well done, tutors! |
