    Children learn how to get along by watching adults. Model appriopriate ways of getting along with along: showing empathy for others, managing angry feeligns, accepting differences, and coping with peer pressure.

    Whose name comes to mind when you hear the word ‘bully’? Bullying is “a negative action when someone intentionally inflicts, or attempts to inflict, injury or discomfort upon another,” says Dan Olweus, a prominent researcher on bullying behaviours.

    An article in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics this summer presented results of a Canadian study by researchers from the University of B.C. and BC Children’s Hospital. Questionnaires used by doctors were largely successful in identifying Learning Disabilities, speech difficulties, fine and gross motor skills as well as autism.

    As a result of concerns expressed to us from parents and professionals, the Learning Disabilities Association has explored the changes coming to our schools regarding changes to the Special Education plans (SEPs).

    This new year brings with it many new challenges, including contending with provincial budget cuts and working collaboratively to ensure that none of the vital early intervention and support programs for persons with Learning Disabilities fall prey to such cuts.
