Thanks for feedback

As we go to press with our third edition of Lives & Times, we are excited about the response we are getting. There has been a lot of great feedback about the paper. It is very helpful to get the evaluations that come with each issue.

After the first issue, we received many suggestions and we tried to make those changes in the second issue.

The evaluations help us to make decisions about the paper but they also help tell the government that resources like this are important to adults. We hope to use some of the comments given to us to receive more money to produce more papers in the future. We are also looking for other ideas to help pay for the paper. We welcome any suggestions you might have.

Please keep in mind that we cannot make changes based on every suggestion we receive. Each one is read and considered, but it would be impossible to do something about all of them. If more than one person makes the same suggestion, and especially if several people make it, then we try to make a change. This is the same for story ideas. Many stories in this issue and the last were from readers' ideas. Some ideas will also appear in the next issue, but we can't promise to do them all.

Some of the things people have told us so for that we have changed include: making the columns bigger; having more short stories on a page; and making some questions in the resource guide about one story only. Story ideas we have followed up on include sites and attractions in the area; Internet sites; job search skills; Stratford festival; different kinds of farming and sports. People like the large print, the local stories and the layout.

Keep the ideas and suggestions coming!

Lives & Times welcomes your letters, stories and information about your community. Keep all stories short and easy to read and then fax to:

Take kids fishing week

When you are thinking of things to do with young ones this summer try fishing.

The week of August 4 has been named Take A Kid Fishing Week.

The provincial government announced this will become an annual event.

The idea behind the event,, was to encourage more children to take up the sport.

Chris Hodgson, Minister of Natural Resources, said he wants to make sure that children don't miss out on all the fun of learning to fish.

Updates from stories in the last edition

  • The Stratford Festival Theatre fund raising campaign has reached its goal of raising $13 million for renovations to the theatre area. It raised the money less than one year after starting the campaign. Now the committee is extending its goal to reach the $15 million mark so it can do more work.
  • The Elmira Junior B Sugar Kings hockey team, which eliminated the Stratford Cullitons in playoff action, went on to win the Provincial title for the first time.
  • The team beat the St. Catherines Falcons after a seven-game series.
  • Bill 104, which will mean the joining of several school boards, was passed by the Ontario government in late April. The biggest changes will mean fewer school boards and less trustees. The government has decided to share the cost of education with municipalities instead of paying for all it as originally stated in the bill.
