   Literacy Plus has recently begun a collaborative partnership to create a work placement and remove barriers to employment for a young local man, Josh Gale.

   This fall, Literacy Plus welcomed new Program Director, David Henstock. David was hired at the end of June, spent some time over the summer becoming familiar with Literacy Plus and the literacy field, then dove in when the office reopened in September.

   The Literacy Plus Board and staff invite students, volunteers and members of the general public to come to the 2010 Annual General Meeting and potluck supper June 9, 2010, at St. James Church in Eganville. As all past attendees know, the food itself is worth the trip.

   Sing for Literacy is the 2010 theme for Family Literacy Day. Why singing? Family literacy is about brushing up literacy skills in fun and different ways. ABC Canada reminds us that many activities allow us to practise our skills, from following a recipe, or reading a map, to singing from a song sheet.

   The 2009 Ontario provincial budget provided for an increased investment in literacy and academic upgrading, allowing service providers to increase services, reduce waiting lists and address capacity issues.

   April is Volunteer Month and Literacy Plus is, as always, very grateful for all the volunteer help that keeps us going. Our volunteer board gives many hours every year to overseeing the policies and finances of the organization, participating on committees, and planning and managing the fundraising activities that keep us afloat.
