New Math Literacy Campaign ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation has launched a new print advertising campaign to create public awareness for the importance of math literacy. Math literacy, or "numeracy," is the ability and skills required to understand and use numbers as a means of communication. According to the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS), approximately 43 per cent of Canadians are at a basic or low numeracy level. This means that about four in ten Canadians struggle with everyday numeracy tasks, such as understanding and using media information, calculating the tax on a purchase, and converting measurements. The new print ads invite readers to call ABC CANADA's toll-free line or visit www.abc-canada.org/math_literacy/, a new Web site. Here, visitors can learn more about the ads, discover interesting and useful math tips and facts, and access other resources. ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation is a national charity that promotes literacy to the public and to the private sector.
