Message from the Chair

photo of Ray DoironGreetings to all friends of the PEI Literacy Alliance.

I am pleased to have started my role as Chair of the PEI Literacy Alliance and I look forward to working with all members of the Board, as well as Catherine and Norm. I will work hard on your behalf to make 2004-2005 a successful year.

Our big activity this fall was the PEI Literacy Summit which the PEI Literacy Alliance sponsored. We gathered 120 people to talk about issues in literacy and how we can improve literacy for all residents of PEI. We will keep you posted on the results of this important event.

Each time I write this column I would like to highlight one thing we can all do to improve literacy. Research shows that reading books to children is one of the best ways to get them started reading. Go to your local library this week and take your child, grandchild, nephew or niece with you. Find a great book to share and read it together. Let the child read to you if you like. Make it a warm and personal time together.

Be sure to check out the many programs and services offered by the PEI Literacy Alliance. And remember, we are all responsible for improving literacy. Please do something today to help someone be a better reader.
