Mae Ames : A Special Volunteer
June is Seniors Month, a time to celebrate seniors and their contributions to our society. Almost 23% of Canadian seniors contribute some time each week as unpaid volunteers. Mae Ames from Charlottetown is one of these special volunteers. For years, Mae has read stories to neighborhood children. Now, as a volunteer in a new program launched by the PEI Literacy Alliance, Mae has been passing along her story-telling tradition to children of all ages as Story Nanny. Mae is a war bride who came to Canada from England in 1946. For many years she has volunteered with Laubach Literacy of Canada to teach adults how to read. Over the years, many adults and children have benefited from Maes kind spirit and nurturing stories. She is just one of many volunteers we will celebrate during Seniors Month this year. Adult Learners Launch Book The launch of I Did It So Can You! A Collection of Stories from Adult Learners of Prince Edward Island was held in the Morell Region Community Learning Centre on April 18.
This book is an exciting and moving collection of stories, poems and thoughts of adult learners from across PEI. Learners were involved in all stages of the publication, from writing and editing to layout and circulation. There are plans to have the anthology digitized and posted to the National Adult Literacy Database. The project was funded by the National Literacy Secretariat with the help of the Morell Region Community Learning Centre and the Institute of Adult and Community Education. |
