Special thanks to CBC’s Karen Mair for hosting the awards ceremony at the 2002 Scrabble for Literacy tournament.

Congratulations to Dianne Hicks Morrow, former executive director of the Alliance, on the release of her first book of poetry. Titled Long Reach Home, this collection contains poems on many personal and political topics.

Congratulations to Jake Baird for his appointment as executive director to the Institute for Adult and Community Education.

2002 Co-operators Learner Achievement Award

The Co-operators Learner Achievement Award is designed to reward and encourage adult learners/students who have distinguished themselves while in a literacy or basic education program.

This year’s winner will receive a framed citation and a cheque for $200.00 from The Co-operators.

This award will be presented at the annual PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy on June 14.

Deadline for applications is May 15th. Call the PEI Literacy Alliance at 368-3620 for an application.

 

2002 Canada Post Literacy Awards

Individual Achievement Awards for a Francophone and an Anglophone in each province presented by CANADA POST. These awards celebrate the achievements of learners who have successfully overcome social and economic barriers by improving their literacy skills.

Educator Awards presented by HEALTH CANADA. These awards honour English and French-speaking educators and advocates who have demonstrated a commitment to the cause of literacy.

Community Leadership Awards presented by the NATIONAL LITERACY SECRETARIAT. These awards honour non-profit, volunteer and labour organizations that have demonstrated long-term achievement, innovation and organizational excellence in furthering the cause of literacy.

Business Leadership Awards presented by the LOWE-MARTIN GROUP. This award recognizes the contribution to literacy made by businesses in Canada. It honours a single business organization that has demonstrated its commitment by establishing or supporting literacy programs in the workplace or in the community.
