2002
Golf Tournament Raises $25,000
One hundred and twenty-four golfers enjoyed beautiful weather
at our 12th annual PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy on June 14.
They helped raise over $25,000 for Island literacy. Winners of
the tournament this year were the McCarville Group consisting
of Mike McCarville, Alan Pickard, Gerry Moore and Wade Mahar.
They finished the round of eighteen holes with a score of 59!
After the golf at Green Gables, the players joined volunteers
and special guests at the New Glasgow Lobster Suppers for a gourmet
luncheon and awards ceremony.
Mike Pendergast entertained with his upbeat music before the
meal. CBC’s Jonathan Torrens and Shelagh Rogers were great
Masters of Ceremonies. Wayne Wright was this year’s Poet
Laureate. As usual we awarded lots of golf prizes which were donated
by the PEI business community. The prize for the Most Honest
team went to The Guardian’s foursome.
Each year the Cooperator’s Learner Achievement Award is
given to an adult learner who excelled in his or her program.
This year’s winner was Claire Walsh. Her heartfelt thank
you reminded us all why we are raising money for literacy.
Golf Committee Chair Bruce Stewart announced a scholarship program
in the memory of Bill Hancox, Harry MacLauchlan and Peter Gzowski,
literacy champions who passed away in the last year. The scholarships
will provide three $1500 awards for adult learners who are continuing
their studies at university or college. The Bill Hancox Memorial
Scholarship will be awarded at UPEI. The MacLauchlan and Gzowski
scholarships will go to Holland College students. Money for the
scholarships will be raised at the PGIs.
