2003 Golf Tournament Raises over $28,000

One hundred and twenty-eight golfers enjoyed beautiful weather at our 13th annual PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy on June 13. They helped raise over $28,000 for Island literacy. Winners of the tournament again this year were the “McCarville Group” who are Mike McCarville, Alan Pickard, Gerry Moore and Gary Moore. They finished the round of eighteen holes with a score of 59!

After the golf at Green Gables, the players joined volunteers and special guests at the New Glasgow Lobster Suppers for a gourmet luncheon and awards ceremony.

Friday the thirteenth was a lucky day for Gerald Beaulieu. He not only won a CBC contest to play in the tournament, but also scored a hole-in-one and claimed a Honda Civic Sedan donated by Capital Honda, a PGI first. Gerald golfed with Boomer Gallant, John McDermott and Liisa Savajarvi.

Musician friends of John McDermott entertained before the meal. CBC’s Matt Rainnie was a great Master of Ceremonies. As usual we awarded lots of golf prizes which were donated by the PEI business community. The prize for the Most Honest team went to Epson Canada.

Each year an adult learner who excelled in his or her program wins the Cooperator’s Learner Achievement Award. This year’s winner was Olive Gallant. Janice Duffy of the Co-operators presented the award.

In her application Olive stated:
My goal in life is to receive my grade 12 diploma and to apply to the Medical Receptionist course. I feel that I have so much knowledge about life and I want to help other people to understand how important it is to have an education. It’s not too heavy to carry around.

Walter Carver was honoured with the Gzowski Award, given to the golfer who most embodies the spirit of the day. This year’s Poet Laureate was Catherine Matthews, who created a beautiful poem to sum up the day.

Many thanks go to our volunteers, especially the hard working committee: Bruce Stewart, Joanne Ings, Bernard Gillis, Lori St. Onge and John Young.
