2004 Golf Tournament Raises over $28,000

One hundred and twenty golfers enjoyed beautiful weather at our 14th annual PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy on June 11. They helped raise over $28,000 for Island literacy. Winners of the tournament again this year were the “McCarville Group” who are Mike McCarville, Alan Pickard, Gerry Moore and Gary Moore. They scored 59.

After the golf at Green Gables, the players joined volunteers and special guests at the New Glasgow Lobster Suppers for a gourmet luncheon and awards ceremony.

Michael Pendergast entertained before the meal. CBC’s Boomer Gallant was a great Master of Ceremonies. Comedian Todd Butler was our featured entertainer. As usual we awarded lots of golf prizes which were donated by the PEI business community. The prize for the Most Honest team went to the Eastern Graphic team.

Each year an adult learner who excelled in his or her program wins the Cooperator’s Learner Achievement Award. This year’s winner was Joachim “Jack” Drew. Sue Tarves of the Co-operators presented the award to Joachim’s partner Doreen Giles. Jack was called away to work in Newfoundland for the summer.

As a special event this year we auctioned the Dale McNevin painting Canada Reads donated to us by the CBC. The money raised will be used in our bursary program.

Gail MacDonald our photographer for the last 14 years was honoured with the Gzowski Award, given to the golfer who most embodies the spirit of the day. This year’s Poet Laureate was Margie Carmichael, who created some humerous verses to sum up the day.

Many thanks go to our many volunteers, especially the hard working planning committee: Bruce Stewart, Joanne Ings, Bernard Gillis, Lori St. Onge, John Young and Jack Desroches.
