The Rising Tide could mean a wave of support for literacy

On December 16 the Literacy Alliance hosted a press conference to urge Paul Martin and his new Cabinet to endorse a new investment strategy for Atlantic Canada. The Rising Tide: A Continuing Commitment to Atlantic Canada is a ten-year investment strategy. It was developed by a working committee of the Atlantic Federal Liberal Caucus. Hillsborough MP Shawn Murphy chaired the committee.

The Rising Tide is an important document that provides an outline for prosperity in Atlantic Canada. It recognises the skills and resources that exist here while identifying areas that need assistance. There is a strong literacy component throughout the document.

The press conference was an initiative of all four Atlantic literacy groups: PEI Literacy Alliance, New Brunswick Coalition for Literacy, Literacy Nova Scotia, and the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was well attended by the media. Shawn Murphy and literacy scholarship winner Carly Timpson also came. Unfortunately the stormy weather made it impossible for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland reps to make it.
