LAUBACH LITERACY BC |
| April 1997 | PROVINCIAL NEWSLETTER | Volume 1, Number 1 |
|
HELLO LAUBACH TUTORS!! This is Jan Seedhouse and Anne Knott, your two BC Field Representatives, in our very first attempt to bring you up to date on Laubach news with this BC newsletter! One of the comments we often hear from tutors is that they feel a bit isolated and disconnected from other tutors. We hope this newsletter goes some way towards alleviating that by giving you news from other councils in the province, as well as information about some of the materials that are available, and upcoming events. Hey, we're not journalism experts here - if you have any suggestions, or just want to tell us what you thought about the newsletter, we'd be happy to hear from you! Jan can be contacted at 1-800-766-4660 or email laubach@mail.netshop.net. Anne can be reached at 1-604-263-6606. Provincial President's Notes
First, an invitation to the Provincial Board Meeting. I encourage every council to try and send a representative if at all possible. I know how difficult that will be but I am an optimist! The meeting will be held on April 19th at the Oakridge Library in Vancouver, from 10 am until noon. It is very important for Laubach BC to become financially independent within the next five years. The first step is a strong Provincial Council. Your attendance or input is needed! If attendance is not possible, perhaps we can have a conference call with Council Chairpersons. The number of councils in BC continues to grow, thanks to the hard work of Jan Seedhouse and her troupe of apprentice trainers. Anne Knott is back from her holiday and is as busy as ever with councils in the Lower Mainland. How do you feel about having our own mini-conference in the Interior next year? There would be training, workshops and fun for tutors and students! Let me know! Grace Saabas, Past President of Laubach Canada will be in Kamloops for a Train-the-Trainers workshop in May. Grace is a wonderful Laubach volunteer and has held every position possible. If you want to know about Laubach, ask Grace. As you have experienced, tutoring can be difficult, isolating and frustrating. It can also be fun, rewarding and a big thrill when there is a breakthrough with your student. You are to be applauded! Your work makes a big difference! With the government downsizing, there will be more and more reliance on volunteers to meet literacy and other needs in BC communities. The face of volunteering is changing and hopefully Laubach BC can meet the challenge! |
