| INTERIOR FIELDWORKER REPORT This is the first newsletter I've had to do on my own as BC now has only one fieldworker, and Moira Anne, who has done the layout in the past, is still on maternity leave. I haven't called you all for input, but hope to for the spring issue. I did want everyone to know about upcoming events and changes in contact numbers. The future of the Lower Mainland fieldworker position will be decided by the LLC Board in November. Many thanks to Anne Knott for the great work she did. Marilyn Hunley, our Provincial Trading Officer, lives in Vancouver, and is doing what she can to fill the gap, most recently by calling a meeting of Lower Mainland council chairs. Don't forget that I can be reached at 1-800-766-4660, or laubach@wkpowerlink.com Jan Seedhouse TIME FOR RHYME Several presenters at workshops at the recent Summer Literacy Institute talked about the importance of learning to rhyme as a pre-literacy skill. When children make up. rhymes with nonsense words they are developing phonological awareness, i.e. they see sounds as manipulable. Nursery rhymes are play with words. Speaking pig Latin (igpay, atinlay) is phonological awareness. Adults who missed out on playing with words may need direct phonological instruction to overcome this deficiency. |
