| Family literacy meeting in Kamloops By the time you get this we will have had a community family literacy meeting. The "Creating a Learning Culture in the Home" workshops that Laubach has developed are just one of many approaches to family literacy and we are looking for community input on what sorts of family literacy development Kamloops wants, needs, and can support. Many communities in BC have received Literacy Cost-Shared grants to start family literacy programs, and Jean Rasmussen of Literacy BC is available as a resource person to help us get started. Call Jan if you're interested. Translation can be: -from one language to another-from oral to written form -from personal to public form -e.g. when you take a passage from your journal and change it for sharing -from non-standard dialect to standard dialect - I find this last a good way to look at a student's writing if it is written using colloquial language and speech patterns. What they are doing is not wrong; it is just non-standard, and may be fine in some situations. But if they are writing a cover letter for a resume, it is appropriate to translate into standard dialect. Students planning to continue their education will need to learn to use standard dialect. (with thanks to Carmen Rodriguez) YOUTH COMMUNITY ACTION This is a provincial program in which youth 15-24 'volunteer' in exchange for credits towards tuition at universities and colleges. In Kamloops one of the volunteer tutors is spearheading the formation of a Peer Youth Tutor Club in which the youth will tutor for 100 hours between October and May. In the Lower Mainland the coordinator for literacy programs under Youth Community Action is Joyce Cameron, at 527-5416. COUNCIL NEWS The Laubach Literacy Council of Vancouver is currently undergoing restructuring to bring on replacement executive members and fill in the gaps caused by the loss of our field worker. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but with a dedicated group of people we should be able to achieve our goals for the year. To aid in reaching our objectives, the Vancouver Council would like to welcome Sarita Nirmel as a new volunteer liaison person to assist tutors with the use of resource materials and the resolution of conflicts between tutors and students. Sarita has received extensive training through Laubach Literacy of California and has a background in teaching English as a second language. Santa will be available Mondays and Tuesdays from I to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. to answer tutor questions. Sarita can be reached at (604) 464-6088. |
