I hope you all enjoyed your summer and are ready to get going again - although I know some of you have been tutoring all summer. May and June were busy for me. Tutors were trained in Prince George and a council formed there. A council was also formed in Merritt and the training will be taking place just before you get this newsletter.

Seven people from BC made it to the LLC convention in Winnipeg this spring. Anne Knott and Kim Jensen took the workshop on "Creating a Learning Culture in the Home", Laubach's addition to the family literacy movement (see article previous page for details). They are available to give workshops to parents so let us know if your council would like to sponsor one.

I took the supervising trainer's workshop and now just have to see one of my Apprentice Trainers certified to become a full-fledged Supervising Trainer!

I also attended the Training and Certification Committee (T&CC) meeting, as Acting Provincial Training Officer (PTO). Marilyn Hunley from Vancouver has agreed to be PTO and will coordinate our BC training as well as attend future T&CC meetings.

On a final note, Grace Saabas from Montreal came to BC and gave a Trainer's Workshop for Apprentice Trainers and the two ESL workshops held in Richmond.

I will be out of the country from September 8th 'til October 6th. Jan Seedhouse or your local Council chairperson will be handling things in my absence. Upon my return, I will be available for conducting the "Creating a Learning Culture in the Home" workshops (see article on Family Literacy, page 1). We received an extremely generous donation from Project Literacy Greater Vancouver which enabled us to purchase a wonderful assortment of children's books that will be put on display during these workshops. Thanks to Thomas Quigley and Darcy Stainton from the Joe Fortes Branch of the Vancouver Public Library for their assistance in suggesting quality books.

In other news, two successful ESOL workshops were held in Richmond in May and June. We ended up with 14 new Laubach tutors and had 12 existing tutors attend the workshop as well. Everyone learned to speak some Russian (quick, what's the Russian name for lamp(a)?)! Thanks to Grace Saabas and Crystal Lee for facilitating these workshops!
