September 8, 2000 is international Literacy Day. This day is set aside each year to recognize the need for literacy programs to help the 48 percent of Canadians who have some difficulty with literacy or numeracy. These statistics are alarming, but even more alarming is the realization that in the new information economy, literacy skills are more important than ever before.

National surveys indicate that only 20 percent of Canadians are equipped to handle the amount of reading and writing required for jobs in the new economy.
