President's Message Dawn Skinner
As many of us do our fall housecleaning, we are
faced with challenges of what to keep, what to
discard, and what to repair or remodel. All this
is done on a budget. We in the Laubach
organization are faced with the same challenges
as we prepare a strategic plan. Thanks to all of
you who took the time to complete the surveys.
This provided valuable information for the
provincial Board. Foremost, you told us that
tutors need more support. We are taking steps to
do that very thing. Funding has been secured to
provide training for tutors in their own
communities. Susan King has added more tutor
support duties to her job description. An on-line
message board is being set up so that your
questions and concerns can be addressed
immediately. Jottings will be sent to active
tutors on a frequent basis. The Mayflower will
still be used as a communication tool for other
literacy members regarding organizational
issues. The lending library will be made more
accessible to tutors. As we continue to maintain
our Laubach household, I ask you to continue
informing us about what is good for you as an
active Laubach member. Watch for the Message
Board on our web page in mid-December.
Together we will continue to renew this
organization and make sure it is enjoyable for
all that are involved. Laubach has been here for
over thirty years and will be around as long as
we are needed. We are still the best volunteer
based, adult tutoring service.
Funding Available to Councils
Each year Peter Gzowski Invitational golf
tournaments are held throughout Canada to raise
funds for literacy. In Nova Scotia the funds are
administered by Literacy Nova Scotia. This year
LLC-NS has been awarded $2,850 to be used
for the following: $850 for the provincial
lending library, $1,250 for Councils to purchase
books and materials, and $750 for Councils to
host additional training for tutors in their
communities. Council Chairpersons have been
sent applications to apply for this funding. The
deadline for applications is Monday, December
6 at noon. Suggestions for training topics and
resources needed should be directed to your
Council Chairperson as soon as possible.
Lending Library On-Line
LLC-NS has a library of tutor and trainer
resources that members can borrow. The books
are kept at the provincial office in Sydney and
can be shipped via Canada Post or by bus. The
complete inventory list and order form is
available in PDF format on the website
or contact the office.
We'll be happy to send a copy to you.
