"Sign on to Literacy" on International Literacy Day (ILD) This year LPQ was very pleased to join The Gazette as a partner in their launch of a pilot project to mark International Literacy Day. The initiative was both a fundraiser and a means of raising awareness. Quebecers were invited to "Sign on to Literacy" and have their names appear in The Wonders of Reading, a special Gazette section which was published on September 8, 2000. This family literacy supplement reached more than 500,000 Gazette readers, and 50,000 additional copies were distributed to local schools and literacy organizations. Half of funds raised will be shared by LPQ and other participating literacy organizations. The other half of the funds will provide free newspapers to schools through The Gazette-in-Education program. LPQ is proud to be part of this project, and we applaud The Gazette for so actively showing their commitment to literacy. The broadcast media also acknowledged ILD. CBC Radio's Homerun conducted an on-air interview with the Executive Director of LPQ. International Literacy Day at the YWCA Quebec Lt.-Gov. Lise Thibault launched a video of the Y's literacy program, "Words for Women." This was followed by a street festival on Crescent Street which featured children's events. All activities were free of charge. LPQ to Hold Annual General Meeting Join us on Thursday, October 26, 2000 as LPQ holds its Annual General Meeting at The Fraser-Hickson Library. At that time, we will present a report on activities of the past year and an audited financial statement. We will also elect a new board for 2000 - 2001. This year our Board Members will be elected according to the terms of our revised By-Laws. The process has changed from past years, and we are confident that the new format best reflects the needs of the literacy community as well as the effective management of LPQ. Following the AGM, LPQ will host a "Members' Night" an event that was requested by a number of our member organizations during the consultation sessions we held as part of our Strategic Planning Project last year. This will be an opportunity for our members to meet and to discuss common challenges, exchange information and discover how to address the literacy needs of our community. Details of the evening will be made available to LPQ members very shortly. |
