Cognitive Enrichment Advantage - Phase II

Following the huge success of LPQ's first four-day training session in Cognitive Enrichment Advantage (CEA) last year, we presented Phase II of CEA.

The training was again given by Bea Fisher, a long-time supporter of CEA. She has done a tremendous amount of work with CEA both in teaching and in training practitioners in Canada and the UK.

Literacy Secretariat, the intention of this project was twofold First, it invited participants who had completed Level I last year to attend a three-day Level II training session; it also offered a four-day Level I training session for anyone who missed the opportunity last year.

Response was again extremely positive and both sessions were once again hugely successful. Last year with the help of NALD, LPQ set up a listserv to allow participants a way to continue learning about CEA and share their experiences once back in the classroom. This year's participants will join that listserv and contribute to the electronic conferencing.

NLS Funds ABC Canada to Create the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy

The Honourable Bill Graham, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre-Rosedale, on behalf of the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada recently announced funding of $40,000 through the National Literacy Secretariat, to create the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy.

In 1986, the late Peter Gzowski founded the PGI Golf Fundraising Events raising more than 6.5 million dollars to enable literacy organizations across Canada to raise funds for literacy programs and services.

ABC Canada will establish a steering committee that will facilitate the development of the legal framework to create the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy. Through this project, the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy will create a way in which an endowment fund will generate an annual income, and with other donations will help support the literacy cause in Canada.
