PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy 2003 After a few years’ rest it was a hole in one for the 2003 PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy - Quebec. It was not the best day weatherwise, although the rain did hold off until mid afternoon. Nevertheless, our golfers didn’t even notice. The tournament was held on May 26 at Val des Lac, a Clublink property in Ste. Sophie, This year’s tournament saw a profit of over $20,000, thanks to the combined support of the 105 golfers who registered to play and of our local and national sponsors and donors. The weather didn’t dampen any spirits. Gazettte President and Publisher, and Tournament Honorary Chairman Larry Smith kept the room buzzing as he emceed the evening’s program. Celebrity golfers, Réjean Houle of Les Canadiens and Peter Dalla Riva, former Alouette, made the event even more special. One of the hotspots was the silent auction table that featured several official signed hockey sweaters, wonderful golf packages, two great printers and many other similar items. The Co-operators Learner’s Award went to Marcel Henry, a RECLAIM student. Nicole Allio of The Co-operators presented Marcel with prizes as well as a cheque. Golfer, Tony Hungerbuhler, entertained everybody as Poet Laureate. He spoke of similarities between golf and literacy in that both presented challenges as well as the pride of accomplishment. We look forward to next year’s PGI Tournament for Literacy-Quebec, and plans are already underway. Come read with me! We were truly amazed at the response to Come read with me! this year. The contest generated so much interest and enthusiasm that we are presently planning for next year’s contest. Ten school boards participated by sending us more than 1,100 entries. Children ranging from K – Cycle 3 submitted pictures and stories expressing their responses to works of Canadian authors discussed in their classrooms. Given the overwhelming response, judges are working to complete the selection process . Watch our Website at www.nald.ca/lpq/read.htm. or call (514) 496-8024. |
