Raise-a-Reader Grants

LPQ ‘s share of the 2002 Raise-a-Reader campaign amounted to $25,930.83. This campaign sponsored by Canwest/Global and The Gazette, is a national annual fundraising program that is held to support and encourage literacy for children.

LPQ members were invited to submit proposals describing their Family Literacy programs. A committee of LPQ considered these proposals, and the following projects were awarded grants:

• Family Ties
Come read with me!
• The Fraser-Hickson Library
• Quebec Federation of Home and School Assoc.
• RECLAIM
• J’apprends avec mon enfant
• The Montreal Children’s Library
• Batshaw Youth and Family Services

Family Literacy Training Continues at LPQ

LPQ’s series of Family Literacy Training sessions continued on Friday, May 9, 2003 when participants attended sessions in Family Literacy Awareness and Training in Volunteer Management.

Workshop presenter, Gillian di Vito shared her solid expertise and discussed a number of topics including Family Literacy in Daily Life; Literacy Ideas: Fact or Fiction; How Children Acquire Language and Supporting Adult Clients Whose Literacy Skills are Low.

During the half-day session on Volunteer Recruitment and Management, she focused on:Outreach and public awareness; Volunteer Recruitment; Pre-service & in-service training of volunteers; Support services for volunteers and Program Evaluation.

Family Literacy Training will continue in the fall.

Members of LPQ are encouraged to submit notices of events or news of your organization. The newsletter is published four times annually--at the end of September, December, March and July.

If you would like your notice included, please mail or fax it to the LPQ office by the first of the month or before. This will ensure that your notice is included in the next issue. Take advantage of this means of communicating with other members of the literacy community.
