LPQ Holds Annual General MeetingLPQ held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday November 2, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tembec in Montreal. At that time, a report on activities of the past year and an audited financial statement were presented. At the same time, the following slate of directors was elected for 2004 – 2005: Linda Couture LPQ also wished Tahira Ashtar much luck as she completed her second term as a member of the LPQ Board of Directors. Another Banner Year for Raise-a-ReaderNow well established as an annual activity for The Gazette, Raise-a-Reader was a huge success in 2004. This year, Raise-a-Reader Day was held on October 7 and raised more than $110,000 which will be distributed among the three partners, LPQ, CNIB and La foundation québecoise pour l'alphabétisation. Participants met early in the morning at 1000 La Gauchiètiere where there was a great deal of enthusiasm and celebrating. Volunteers hit the streets to sell papers and Montrealers again rose to the occasion. Celebrities were on hand to exchange an edition of the newspaper for Raise-a-Reader donations. As usual, spirits were high as hawkers returned from various downtown Montreal locations with their toonies and loonies, and often more. As in the past two years, LPQ's portion of these funds will be made available to our members who have Family Literacy programs. They will be invited to submit project proposals which will be judged by an LPQ committee. Successful candidates will be awarded Raise-a-Reader grants to help them carry out their projects. More information concerning these grants will be sent to LPQ members in the near future. Come Read With Me! 2004 Winners AnnouncedWinners of the 2003-2004 Come Read With Me! contest were announced and recognized at an Awards Assembly on October 5 at Sinclair Laird School in Montreal. Proud parents, teachers and guests acknowledged the winners who were present as they received their winners' certificates and $75 gift certificates for books. Their schools also received gift certificates of $500 for books. The highlight for all was a reading by Marie-Louise Gay, prominent Canadian children's author. Started in 2002, the goals of this contest are to promote literacy among young Quebecers as well as to encourage young people to take a greater interest in reading for pleasure. The contest promotes Canadian literature while creating a greater awareness of literacy. |
