2004 PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy

There was no way to improve on this year’s PGI held at Club de Golf Le Blainvillier in Blainville on Tuesday June 8. The weather was perfect, the Club was outstanding and we welcomed 136 golfers—the most that we have ever had and only two foursomes away from selling out.

This year The Gazette played a much bigger role as our partner, and their contribution was extraordinary. Working with the people in the Marketing Department was truly a pleasure. Their enthusiasm and professionalism added so much to the day as well as to the weeks leading up to the tournament.

Larry Smith, now President of The Alouettes, was once again our Honorary Chairperson and emcee. His charm and contagious enthusiasm made the evening a delight, while Gazette columnist James Mennie was most entertaining and insightful as our Poet Laureate.

Indicative of the outstanding success of this year’s tournament is the bottom line. While final numbers are not yet available, an early accounting shows that this year’s tournament saw a profit of approximately $60,000, quite an increase over last year. This money will benefit literacy initiatives in Quebec, including Raise-a-Reader.

We could not be happier about every aspect of the tournament and are already planning next year’s tournament.

PGI Grants Awarded

Although the golf tournament ends in June, the true result comes much later when we are able to distribute the grants. In May, several LPQ member groups received grants from the 2003 PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy.

Recipients were:

  • The Fraser-Hickson Library
  • Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations
  • RECLAIM
  • J’apprends avec mon enfant
  • Literacy in Action

Raise-a-Reader Grants Awarded

As a beneficiary of the Gazette’s Raise-a-Reader program, LPQ distributes our share of the funds raised to our member groups whose grant proposals have been selected by an LPQ committee. Grants for the 2003 Raise-a-Reader went to:

  • The Fraser-Hickson Library
  • Family Ties
  • Literacy in Action
  • Montreal Children’s Library
  • J’apprends avec mon enfant
  • Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations
  • Come Read With Me!

We wish these groups much success with their work.
