Canada Post Literacy Awards Ceremony
Canada Post 2000

LPQ was invited to host the Canada Post Literacy Awards Ceremony 2000 and did so very proudly.

The event was held at the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal. Approximately 85 invited guests honoured winners of this year's literacy awards. Representatives of Canada Post and sponsors of the event presented awards to adult learners and literacy providers from English and French Quebec.

Following the awards ceremony, guests enjoyed a screening of the film, "Reading the Museum/Lire le Musée" produced by the Canadian Museums Association in cooperation with literacy groups from Quebec, New Brunswick and Alberta. Guests were then invited to small reception in the Atrium of the Museum.

Inter-Provincial Family Literacy Forum

Gillian di Vito represented LPQ at this two-day meeting which was held in October in Toronto. Representatives from every province as well as from the NLS met to lay the foundation for program development.

The main purpose of the forum was to lay the foundation for collaboration between family literacy practitioners in each province and territory. It was also a call for collective action that will contribute to the continued and improved development of family literacy in Canada.

Thanks to the advance preparation by the steering committee, efficacious facilitating as well as the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of all the participants, all objectives were met.

The meeting closed with the definition of a vision statement which should be front and centre for all future discussions and reflections on Family Literacy.

LD Grants Reminder

Grants Members of LPQ are once again reminded that we chose to allocate our portion of the profits of Golf Day for Literacy '99 to helping adults with learning disabilities.

This money has allowed us to offer a limited number of bursaries to adult learners who may have a learning disability.

We are committed to offering opportunities for the best possible clinical services to adults who have learning disabilities. To this end, we have been working with The Learning Associates of Montreal to carry out clinical assessment and planning services to people with learning disabilities.

These careful assessments are very time-consuming and costly. For that reason we would like to ensure that services are made available to all individuals who need them, not only to learners who can afford this cost.

Some bursaries have been awarded, but there are still funds available to award others.

Regular Members of LPQ who provide direct service have received information about how their learners can apply for these bursaries. If your organization qualifies, be sure that you have all the information you need to help an adult learner apply for a subsidy while there are still funds.
