LPQ Literacy Award - Lorna Yates

The annual LPQ Literacy Award is presented to an individual who has contributed to the public understanding or provision of English-language literacy. The recipient of the award this year is Lorna Yates, former coordinator of McGill Students for Literacy.

It is very refreshing and encouraging to see the award go to someone as young as Lorna--especially someone who has achieved so much in such a short time.

The people who nominated Lorna spoke of her as being a great inspiration--tireless in her efforts and enthusiasm. They praised her for her leadership qualities and her tenacity.

John Daniel O'Leary, President of Frontier College was unable to attend the meeting, but he sent a letter congratulating Lorna on behalf of everyone at Frontier College. He acknowledged her hard work, talent and commitment to literacy in Quebec and Ontario.

LPQ wishes Lorna continued success in her work in literacy as well as in her future law career.

Research Project on LEARN Line

LPQ is pleased to announce that we have begun work on a research project which will look at the LEARN Lines across the province. While LPQ runs the LEARN Line in the Montreal area, there are six other LEARN Lines in Quebec which are handled by community-based groups in areas beyond the 514 area code.

Mandie Aaron, a Montreal researcher, has been hired by LPQ and is currently developing a protocol as she undertakes work on the project.

Our objective is to establish the effect of a media campaign on the LEARN Line. This will lead to valuable information about the numerous factors which influence callers, whether they pursue services and how successful they are in their endeavours.

The research has begun and the project will be completed by May, 1997.

When the data has been collected and organized, LPQ will prepare a full report which will document the provincial picture. We will also prepare individual reports which will be generated for specific providers for their own use only.

Funding for this project has been made possible by Golf Day for Literacy'96 and a Foundation grant.
