Another Successful Golf Day for Literacy

Despite unseasonably cool weather, this year's Golf Day for Literacy was easily the best yet. CBC regulars Dennis Trudeau, Caroline Corey, Ray Fichaud and Paul Graif joined our 72 other golfers who warmed the day with their great spirit and good humour. This year's list of celebrity golfers also included WCW wrestlers Jacques Rougeau and P.C. Ouellet.

For the second consecutive year, the event was held at Cedarbrook Golf Club in Ste-Sophie in the lower Laurentians. Not only are the club and course ranked amongst the best in Quebec, but the service and ambiance could not have been better.

The day began with brunch, a golf clinic and some practice time on the driving range. After a noon shotgun start, golfers enjoyed the course and didn't seem to notice the chill in the air.

Things began to warm up when the game was over as everyone enjoyed cocktails to the accompaniment of jazz pianist Eddie Siegner. At the same time, guests bid on items which were displayed on our silent auction table.

This year we took special pride in our silent auction as it took on a new look with an emphasis on art. We received donations of works from artists Terry Tomalty and Michael Khoury as well as from Calerie Kastel, and Calerie Elena Lee.

The success of the day was due to our many golfers and sponsors who made it all possible and to everyone at CBC Montreal for their ongoing participation and commitment to literacy in Quebec. Special mention and thanks go to CKGM/CHOM which was most gracious in promoting the tournament on both the AM and FM dials.

Finally, a very special thank you to our host and emcee Dennis Trudeau, who gets better every year. His enthusiasm was contagious as he hosted our evening activities. This year he and the crew of Newswatch were spectacular in their coverage of the tournament.

A preliminary audit indicates an increase in our net profit over last year. Final numbers and plans for the proceeds will be announced when all accounting has been completed.

We look forward to Golf Day for Literacy '98 which is scheduled for May 25, 1998, at Cedarbrook once again.

LPQ Annual General Meeting Set

LPQ's annual general meeting will be held on Thursday, November 6 at Dawson College.

As in past years, the AGM will be followed by a program co-hosted by The Centre for Literacy. This year's program, "50/50 Management" invites participants to learn about a new way of managing volunteer literacy programs to maximize follow up and retention of both students and tutors. Although developed in a literacy context,, the program can be adapted for any organization with a broad base of volunteers. More information will follow in the fall.
