Something on My Mind Launched on the Internet
On May 14, nearly 20 adult students from Isa Helfield's Secondary I English class at Montreal High School attended a "double launch" of their book, Something on My Mind.
The Centre for Literacy hosted a reception where the book, an anthology of the student's poetry and artwork was unveiled. Following that launch, students and guests watched with excitement as the book was electronically launched on the NALD website.
The event, covered by CBC Newswatch, was exciting for everybody involved for it celebrated one of many positive outcomes in the adult learning community.
Something on My Mind can be purchased at The Centre for Literacy for $2 plus $1 for mailing and handling.
WORD Wide Web Grows
We are pleased to report another successful season in our partnership with the Quebec Drama Federation.
This year more than 100 pairs of tickets were donated by various theatre companies in Quebec and distributed to adult learners through this network.
Interest in the WORD Wide Web has grown since we first introduced the project two years ago, and a number of happy theatre goers have written lovely thank you letters reporting on their reactions to the plays they saw.
We look forward to another successful year and remind teachers and tutors to watch for announcements of tickets as they become available. Already we can announce that the Centaur Theatre Company has donated 10 passes for two for each of the following plays:
- Picasso At the Lapin Agile from Sept. 23 - Oct. 12
- The Orphan Muses from Oct. 21 - Nov. 23
- Twelfth Night from Jan. 27 - Feb. 15, 1998
Please call the LPQ office for information about obtaining tickets for your students.
Software Evaluation Report Created
A guide to Evaluation Reports of Computer-Based Learning Systems for Adult Basic Literacy Education is now available. The guide, written by David Roberts of the Commission scolaire du Littoral and researcher Harold Spanier, was funded through I.F.P.C.A. and created under the concerted project of QLWG and the Commission scolaire du Littoral.
The guide compiles evaluation documentation of computer based learning systems for adult literacy students at all levels of learning and establishes a reference manual of these materials. The guide, open ended to facilitate updating of new material, is intended to assist those in their decision to evaluate or finance a computer based system.
Highlights of the guide include curriculum ranges,, pedagogical emphasis, special features, program distributors and a reference section with the access codes and titles of evaluation reports.
The evaluation reports have been formatted and scanned on 10 floppy disks which are organized by program titles. A wordprocessing program is required to access the documents.
The guide is now housed at NALD and can be browsed on their Web Site at http://www.nald.ca
