Golf Day for Literacy/Journée de Golf pour l'alphabétisation

It's that time again! Mark Monday, May 27 on your calendars and plan to join LPQ at Cedarbrook Golf Club for the best golf day yet. With an early start this year, we hope to begin the tournament fever.

LPQ is proud to acknowledge the support of radio and TV at CBC Montreal. The event will again be emceed by Dennis Trudeau of CBC's Newswatch. For the past two years, Dennis has joined our guests in a round of golf then hosted our evening festivities.

Golf will be followed by dinner and a special treat--the music of the legendary Charlie Biddle.

As always, you can participate in a number of ways. If you are a golfer, you can register on your own or with your foursome. If you are not a golfer, you can still support the cause with a cash donation or by donating an item for our silent auction.

Charitable receipts will be issued. Plan to participate and tell your friends.

For information, call the LPQ office or 931-7434.

Bell Canada Supports LPQ
LPQ is pleased to announce that Bell has become one of our partners in literacy.

Bell is extremely sensitive to the cause of literacy and has been very involved in the literacy community in French Quebec for some time. Now, LPQ is pleased to count Bell among our supporters.

LPQ appreciates Bell's help and looks forward to a mutually rewarding union.

NALD
On February 10 the LPQ Board met for an all-day meeting which included a three-hour session on board development.

Over lunch, we were joined by Charles Ramsey, Fredericton, N.B.-based Director of the National Adult Literacy Database whose mandate is to facilitate delivery of literacy programs in Canada by providing an information network for adult literacy information to serve all those in the field.

Charles gave an energetic and convincing presentation about ways of using new technologies to link literacy providers and students across the province and the country.

LPQ will have a Home Page on the World Wide Web very soon. All literacy organizations with the electronic capacity to do so are invited to create their own Web Page. Those who are not equipped to do so are invited to list their information on LPQ's page. Call the LPQ office for information.

Award to Carol Potter
Carol Potter of the YWCA's Words for Women service has been named Woman of the Year. This award recognizes Carol for her contribution to women's literacy.

LPQ congratulates Carol in receiving this honour and wishes her continued success in her work.

LEARN Line
To coincide with ABC CANADA's survey of the impact of the LEARN line, LPQ has been tracking calls made to our own LEARN line.

While it became clear early in the campaign that the number of calls was increasing, we did not anticipate the magnitude of that increase. In comparing the number of calls received from September '94 - February '95 to the same time period the previous year, we find that the number of callers has more than doubled.

The majority of providers report that they too notice the increase and have been working hard to keep up with the demand. While this is very encouraging in terms of outreach, providers stress the need to volunteer tutors.

LPQ Launches Media Campaign
One of the coalition's goals for 1996 is to raise the profile of literacy in Quebec. To do this and to promote literacy services across the province, LPQ has launched a media campaign.

On January 22 CBC-TV began running three 15-second public service announcements which continued throughout February. They will be repeated at various time throughout the year.

To complement the TV spots, LPQ ads have begun appearing in The Gazette and the Quebec Community Newspapers Association are developing ads as well. The print ads will appear following roughly the same schedule as the PSAs. In this way, we hope to create a very high profile for the LEARN line, LPQ and literacy services across the provinces.

Both the TV spots and the community newspaper ads appear province wide. All media outlets have matched our buy at a ratio of 3:1 or 2:1 making our investment very worthwhile.

WORD-Wide Web
The partnership continues. In December, Theatreworks presented two more tickets. These were for "Raggedy Anne's Christmas" which was performed at The Fraser Hickson Institute. On this occasion, the tickets were turned over to RECLAIM.

Ten tickets/vouchers have been donated by the Centaur. So far, these complimentary passes have gone to:
· John Beaucage, Adult Education, Paul VI High School
· Martin Aaron, McGill, Students for Literacy
·Gilann McConnell, South Shore Reading Council

Concordia University, Department of Theatre has donated three sets of 2 tickets. So far, these have gone to:
· Vicky Fraser and her tutor, Mona Arsenault, Laurenval Volunteer and Literacy Council
· P.S.B.G.M. - Adult Services.

Some complimentary tickets are still available, and we would like to see them used. If your group has not yet been a recipient, we urge you to call us.

LEARN Line 931-7434 Literacy Partners of Quebec

The Labrador Literacy and Action Network - A New Development
Since 1990, Labrador community groups, in cooperation with the Labrador Institute of Northern Studies, (LINS) have been developing approaches to providing community-based literacy in remote areas.

For the past three years LINS and Frontier College have worked with local groups and communities to develop a broad range of literacy activities through the Labrador Community Initiative.

Currently in the research and development stage the LLIAN, as it is now being called, has brought together representatives of LINS and Frontier College to develop values, goals, a mission statement and an operation plan.

They would like any help that any other members of the literacy community can offer. The LLIAN Steering Group would like to know if anyone can share:
· a list of values, a mission statement and/or goals
· information from other isolated communities
·ways to link up with the LLIAN

If you are able to provide the LLIAN Steering Group with any of the information requested, please fax it to Sarah Thompson at (416) 323-3522. This information is needed as soon as possible.

Presentation Folders
A reminder that organizations involved in literacy may still order the Literacy in Quebec Presentation Folders at a cost of $5.00 each. They may be used for raising awareness as well as for approaching funders.
