LPQ to Hold Annual General Meeting

Join us on Thursday, October 18, 2001 at the Ruby Foo's Motor Hotel on Decarie Blvd. in Montreal as LPQ holds it s Annual General Meeting.

At that time, we will present a report on activities of the past year and an audited financial statement. We will also elect a new board for 2001 - 2002.

Following the Annual General Meeting at 7:30 p.m., you are invited to attend a program entitled, "Moving the Markers: New Perspectives on Adult Literacy Rates in Canada." Author of the report, Susan Sussman, is a Researcher and Executive Director of the Ontario Literacy Coalition

Sussman will describe a national research project she carried out between March 2000 and June 2001 under the auspices of Movement for Canadian Literacy (MCL). Her research project is predicated on the assumption that adult literacy rate data influences public policies and programs related to adult literacy issues. Sussman's project was initially designed to re-examine existing literacy rate data from a demographic perspective to answer questions like the following:

  • How old are the majority of adults with low literacy skills?
  • Are they currently employed?
  • What language do they speak?
  • How much education have they had?
  • Where do they live?

Over the course of the study, Sussman reviewed the literature related to measuring adult literacy rates as well as the literature.

Sussman challenges some commonly held assumptions about the number and characteristics of adults in Canada who are most likely to have literacy difficulties. By extension, she calls into question the kinds of strategies needed to improve their circumstances and "move the markers" on literacy. She will be with us to present an overview of her research and to answer questions and discuss her findings. Plan to join us for this very interesting new look at the data.
