Literacy Stamp Unveiled

On September 9 to mark International Literacy Day, ABC CANADA and Canada Post launched one of the nation's largest promotional literacy efforts. They asked Canadians to donate five cents to family literacy each time they purchase a new postage stamp.

"Literacy begins at home" is the theme of the new stamp which will sell for 50¢ - 45¢ in postage and a 5¢ donation--to help encourage family literacy.

Family literacy programs build on existing parenting skills to foster a literacy-friendly environment in the home. Some programs provide educational upgrading for parents as well as for children.

To support this initiative, LPQ has begun using the literacy stamp. We urge other literacy organizations to do the same. The stamps are available at Canada Post outlets or by phone at 1-800-565-4362.

IALS Canadian Results

Reading the Future: A Portrait of Literacy in Canada is a detailed study derived from the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) which was released last December.

The Canadian report was released on September 12. Following the release, LPQ received several calls from the media; Linda Shohet, LPQ President, appeared on CTV's morning show "On-Line" to discuss the latest results.

The report was put out by StatsCan and indicates that the findings do not differ much from the findings of LSUDA, conducted in 1989. However, the Canadian report gives a detailed picture of our situation.

LPQ has received one complete kit which includes one copy of the publication as well as backgrounders. We also have several other kits which do not contain the full publication. Please come by and take one if you are interested.

NLS Review of the Anglophone Quebec Literacy Sector

The National Literacy Secretariat, in cooperation with the Government of Quebec, has commissioned Universalia Management Group to conduct a review of the critical issues facing the Anglophone literacy sector in Quebec.

Following interviews with representatives of 33 organizations involved in delivery, coordination and funding of Anglophone literacy services, the first draft of a report was circulated in late August and a second draft was circulated early in September.

Individuals who participated in interviews with Universalia received these reports. A final report is being compiled incorporating feedback from some organizations involved.

On August 29, a meeting in Montreal brought together representatives of the NLS, Universalia and the four major literacy organizations, LPQ, The Centre for Literacy, Quebec Literacy Working Group (QLWG) and Literacy Volunteers of Quebec/Laubach Literacy of Canada-Quebec (LVQ/LLCQ) which includes the Concerted Projects.

This was the first of a series of meeting which are scheduled to take place over the next four months. Participants will discuss means by which the Anglophone literacy community can maximize available resources in the province.

LPQ will continue to make these tickets available to a literacy or ABE student who is currently receiving services through your organization. Ideally, the student could attend the performance with his/her teacher or tutor.

The Centaur Theatre has donated the following:
