LPQ to Hold Annual General Meeting This year's Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 5, 1998 from 5:00p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Dawson College. At that time, we will present a report on activities of the past year and an audited financial statement. We will also elect a new board for 1998-2000 and present the LPQ Literacy Award to a member of the literacy community. LPQ is now seeking nominations to the Board of Directors as well as for the recipient of the LPQ Literacy Award, and we invite you to submit the name of a candidate in one or both areas. You may already have received our AGM package which includes nominations forms. Literacy and the Federal Government LPQ will host a program following our AGM, and we are especially excited about this year's event which is entitled "Your MPs and Literacy," At that time, a number of MPs and Senators will be form a panel to talk about literacy. The evening will be an excellent opportunity to stress the importance of keeping literacy high on the agenda by making it a part of other government departments like Youth, Justice and Health. Finally, we hope to look at how this can impact on literacy in Quebec. Dennis Trudeau of CBC Newswatch will moderate the panel of politicians and literacy experts as we explore literacy in Canada and the role of the Federal government in promoting literacy. Panelists confirmed at time of printing are Marlene Jennings, MP NDG-Lachine; and Craig McNaughton, Executive Director, Movement for Canadian Literacy. The discussion will take place at Dawson College following our AGM from 7:30 to 9:30. Look for your invitation in the mail and plan to attend. For more information please call the LPQ office. International Literacy Day Events Several events took place in the Montreal area to mark International Literacy Day this year. LPQ was proud to unveil the winning posters in the LPQ/Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations Poster Contest which we launched to mark International Literacy Day last year. The project has come full circle and posters will be widely disseminated. Winners were Jennifer Ranallo, Vannessa Di Re and Charlotte Fisher. The Centre for Literacy held a press conference in the lobby of The Montreal General Hospital to launch their Health and Literacy Resource kit. The YWCA, "Words for Women" hosted a pot luck lunch for their students and tutors. Golf Day for Literacy '98 Grants Available With the final accounting now complete, we are very pleased with the net profits from this year's Golf Day for Literacy which showed a slight increase over last year. This is most uplifting given budget restraints and other fundraising difficulties. We are always happy to see a good result and to be able to pass the proceeds on to the community. As we did last year, LPQ will be offering our Regular Members the opportunity to apply for a golf grant. Having hosted the tournament in partnership with The Centre for Literacy, our share of the profits is $3,250.00 which we targeted for grants to Family Literacy programs. If your organization is a Regular Member of LPQ and currently has a Family Literacy program, you are eligible to apply for a grant. We will be sending out more information in the coming weeks, but if you would like more details please call the LPQ office. |
