International Literacy Day, 1999

Several local events marked International Literacy Day on Wednesday, September 8.

LPQ was invited to participate in a discussion about literacy with CJAD Radio host Peter Anthony Holder. Judy Brandeis, Executive Director of LPQ joined him and Lisa Lucas, Director of Action ABC as they explored the issue of literacy in Quebec.

Newswatch, CBC-TV featured literacy on both its evening newscasts. They led with a look at the state of front-line services and spoke to Lisa Lucas, Director of Action ABC for insights into the plight of literacy teachers.

This was followed by coverage of the presentation of an award by The Centre for Literacy to Dennis Trudeau honouring him for his continuing support to the cause of literacy. This coincided with a half-day display on literacy and health in the lobby of the Montreal General Hospital.

LPQ’s Proceeds from Golf Day for Literacy ’99

We are very pleased to report that once again, proceeds from this year’s Golf Day for Literacy exceeded last year’s. This year’s final net profit was about $13,000.00, which LPQ will share equally with The Centre for Literacy.

LPQ has committed its share of this money to help identify learning disabilities in adult learners. We will work with The Learning Associates of Montreal to subsidize learners who are suspected of having a learning disability and provide them the opportunity to have the necessary testing to confirm this.

If your organization provides direct literacy service and is a Regular Member of LPQ, you are encouraged to direct eligible learners to apply for a subsidy. Within the next few weeks, all eligible organizations will receive detailed information about how to apply for this funding.

If you would like more information, please contact the LPQ office.

LPQ to Hold Annual General Meeting

Join us on Tuesday, November 9, 1999 as LPQ holds its Annual General Meeting. at The Fraser-Hickson Library.

At that time, we will present a report on activities of the past year and an audited financial statement. We will also elect a new board for 1999-2001 and present the LPQ Literacy Award to a member of the literacy community.

LPQ is now seeking nominations to the Board of Directors, and we invite you to submit the name of a candidate for the position.

Following the AGM, LPQ will host a presentation by educational representatives of Corrections Services Canada. This will be an opportunity to discuss how to address the literacy needs of specific learners.
