Return to Parliament Hill:

Literacy Action Day 2002!

What a difference a year makes!

photo image of the Parliament Hill in OttawaOctober 24, 2002 was my second Literacy Action Day (LAD) and, like last year, one of the biggest hurdles was my own nerves. Unlike last year, I knew that the day would be well planned and all delegates would be well prepared, so the nervous tension was inspiring rather than crippling.

As usual, the day began with Senator Joyce Fairbairn’s kick-off breakfast for delegates. Last year’s breakfast had, for me at least, been a blur of words and food wasted. This year the words were inspiring and the food sustaining and I went off to our first meeting beaming and confident. By the time we all met up at the end of the day, every face was as relaxed and confident as mine.

As surprising as it may seem, politicians are interested in the issue and, in most cases, are aware of the problems and eager for solutions. It is wonderful to be able to offer them things to do both in their own communities and on ‘the hill.’

Learners Listening to Learners: OLC Learner Involvement in Research

A few learners had an extra treat this year. As we were heading back to our hotel at the end of the day, Yukon MP Larry Bagnell invited us on a tour of the House. It was very exciting to walk in the footsteps of so many of Canada’s greatest. We got to take pictures of each other in the Speaker’s chair and those pictures and memories will be treasured for a long time. I would like to thank Mr. Bagnell for taking the time to make our day really special.

It is almost unbelievable that LAD staff, led by Chris Dendys and her team, could schedule a day of meetings for nearly 100 delegates. They do it well and make it seem easy. Thanks to them and to the politicians who care enough to listen and learn from us.

Janet McLeod (LAN Chair)
