Learners — your voice is important

Literacy Action Campaign 2002

Learners have “inside knowledge” about what it’s like to have problems with reading and writing, and about what helps and what gets in the way of going back to school. MCL believes that all Canadians should have a chance to get the education they need to get decent jobs, take good care of their families and participate in their communities. To make that happen, we need to convince governments and the general public how important it is. That’s the reason for MCL’s Fall 2002 Literacy Action Campaign.

This issue of Learners in ACTION talks about some of the things you and your teachers can do to support the campaign and make your voice heard.

There are three things we’d really like everyone to do if they can:

  • Tune in to the Adult Learners Week web cast on September 5. (See the Computer Corner, page 9 for details on this special event.)

  • Write a letter to their MP. (There’s a sample letter on the MCL website.)

  • Look at the Literacy Action Agenda Discussion Guide and tell us what you think. (The Discussion Guide will be coming soon in a special edition of literacy.ca and on MCL’s website.)

You’ll find many more campaign ideas and resources on MCL’s website. Go to www.literacy.ca — click on Literacy Action Campaign 2002 in the “What’s New” box.

The online campaign tells teachers and learners how they can:

We hope you, your classmates and your teacher or tutor will take some time to do some of these activities this Fall. You’ll not only learn a lot, but you’ll be helping to make things better for all Canadian literacy learners.
